Summer Adventures In Narnia
A warrior prince…a talking lion…and four children on another amazing adventure.
Prince Caspian, the second film based on C.S. Lewis’ classic book series,
The Chronicles
Of Narnia, is on its way to your local theater; and it promises to make Summer 2008 even
more exciting for moviegoers.
Like the book, the film opens one year after The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe,
and
follows the four Pevensie children back to a very different Narnia than the one they left.
Thirteen hundred years have passed in the mythical land; and they soon learn they have been
summoned to ward off an evil king and return rightful heir Prince Caspian to the throne.
Once again, the folks at Walt Disney Studios and Walden Media have created a cinematic
masterpiece sure to dazzle moviegoers of all ages. Some departures from the book were
necessary to take the story from page to screen, but don’t worry; the filmmakers are working
closely with C.S. Lewis’ estate to preserve his legacy. In fact, Lewis’ son, Douglas Gresham,
is one of the producers - and it’s rumored he has a cameo role in this film.
Prince Caspian is one of the most exciting stories in Lewis’ series, and one of my
personal favorites. As a middle schooler, I remember waiting to read it until summer
break; when I re-read it now, I am transported back to Narnia and to my childhood front
porch, where I devoured the book and a box of Saltines.
The redemptive themes - pride and humility, vengeance and forgiveness, deliverance and
restoration - are timeless. The film is sure to create opportunities for families to
discuss those issues and how they apply to real situations and relationships; but there
is still no substitute for allowing imagination to paint pictures in our minds with every
turn of the page. Take some time before the movie hits theaters to read Lewis’ masterpiece
as a family – or by yourself. You’ll be entertained, inspired, and ready to take on the
lines at the Cineplex!
Prince Caspian opens nationwide May 16th. This film is not yet rated
