Covenant vs. Contract

Covenant vs. Contract

“It will save you also from the adulteress, from the wayward wife with her seductive words, who has left the partner of her youth and ignored the
covenant she made before God.”

Proverbs 2:16-17, NIV

God has always longed for a relationship with us. Throughout history He has made covenants with people and nations. You and your family are a part of a covenant. Marriages are covenant as opposed to contractual arrangements. Covenants and contracts are very different. A contract can be broken and usually is. It also has limitations and time frames. The terms of a contract allow one to opt out under certain conditions.

A covenant on the other hand is binding. It is meant to be eternal. God made covenants throughout history with Israel and individuals like Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, David, and with us in the New Testament. God takes covenants seriously and so should we.

If we are married, God expects us to live by the covenant we made to our spouse: to love till death do us part, for better or worse. As parents, this is a very important example to live out in front of our children. If our children see us break our covenant we made in marriage, it will make it much easier for them to picture marriage as a contract to be broken.

It is important to know that even in a life-long covenant marriage, there will be problems, pains and troubles. They are to be expected and even talked about with our children. They do not need to think Mom and Dad never have problems. The important thing is that we are faithful to our covenant. Anyone can break a contract; only very special people will make their marriage a very special life-long commitment.

QUESTION: Why not take a few minutes and renew your vows with your spouse? If you have small children, pretend you are re-enacting your marriage ceremony and repeat your vows and let them dress up as your flower girl or ring bearer. If you have teens, discuss with them the importance of committing to a covenant marriage before they find their mate.
