Living in God’s Synergy

Living in God’s Synergy

“And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.”
Romans 8: 28, NLT

A little boy is telling his Grandma how “everything” is going wrong: school, family problems, severe health problems, etc. Meanwhile, Grandma is baking a cake. She asks her grandson if he would like a snack, which, of course, he does. “Here, have some cooking oil.” “Yuck” says the boy. “How about a couple raw eggs? ” “Gross, Grandma!” “Would you like some flour then? Or maybe baking soda?” “Grandma, those are all yucky!” To which Grandma replies: “Yes, all those things seem bad all by themselves, but when they are put together in the right way, they make a wonderfully delicious cake!

God works the same way. Many times we wonder why he would let us go through such bad and difficult times. But God knows that when He puts these things all in His order, they always work for good! We just have to trust Him and, eventually, they will all make something wonderful!”

Thanks Grandma! Thanks be to God. God causes everything to work together for the good. In Greek it is sunergi. In English it is synergy; defined in The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language as: syn·er·gy n. The interaction of two or more agents or forces so that their combined effect is greater than the sum of their individual effects.

The ingredients alone may seem insignificant, or even “yucky.” But mix that with depression, with the financial challenge of paying the mortgage after the unexpected lay-off, while trying to save for your teen’s college tuition, and bake it in the heat of suburban stress and what do you get? A mess? No. A migraine? Maybe. A masterpiece? Definitely. Why? Because God is at work perfecting your patience, chiseling Christ-likeness into your soul, and sanding off the rough-edged residue of the person you used to be.

QUESTION: Can you identify how God is synergizing your circumstances for your benefit? How can you cooperate with His calling and purpose for you? In what practical ways can you be more like the Lord today?
