No Longer a Slave

No Longer a Slave

“So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son,
God has made you also an heir.”

Galatians 4:7, NIV

I am my father’s heir. That puts me in a pretty good position. My father is a great and powerful man. Do not misunderstand. I am not bragging. My father is what he is before I was even born. He is a creative artist of considerable skill and renown, and has thus amassed a fortune virtually beyond reckoning. You wanna talk land? My father owns land everywhere. Art? You would not believe the beauty and bounty of his collection. Money? I would not even venture a guess. Houses? I am guessing I could live in a different mansion every day of the year and still not see them all. But it is not just how he can provide for me that makes my father unique. He has got enormous power, which he often wields for my benefit. If I get sick, I have every confidence that he will do whatever he sees fit to care for my needs. When I make a mistake, my father is always there to help me through. The bottom line is that I will never face any obstacle, ever, that I cannot overcome with my father’s help.

Now my father has many employees and acquaintances. He is, after all, famous. He is known by kings and presidents. But I am his heir. I am his child. Lest you think me spoiled let me assure you that I love my father because he is my father, not because he is rich and powerful. He adopted me when I had nothing and his love is what sustains and amazes me to this day. I am grateful to be his heir; but even more, to be his child.

QUESTION: You have discerned, no doubt, that my earthly father is not the subject of this devotion. He is a good father who has provided well for his family, but there are limits to what any earthly father can do for his child, not so with my God. Are you a child and heir of God? What are you afraid of?
