The lighthouse represents the purpose and mission of the church. A lighthouse is a tower with an extremely strong light that serves as a navigational aid for mariners. Lighthouses help sailors determine their position, inform them that land is near, and warn them of dangerous reefs and rocks. In the same way, the church exists to be a tower of God’s grace and truth, shining the strong light of Jesus Christ as a navigational aid to those seeking guidance through the dangers of our time and storms of life. It is a powerful image symbolizing the most significant work on earth.

The ancient Egyptians still hold the world’s record for the tallest lighthouse (400 feet!) but today, with the assistance of a huge compound lens, the light from a lighthouse can be seen for a distance of twenty miles. Do you know where the light from a lighthouse shines brightest? At its point of origin; its home base. The light that shines farthest always shines brightest at home!

God’s intention in fulfilling His mission in this world is directly tied to how you live your life at home, how well you let the light of Christ’s love and life shine into those relationships most precious to you. If you want to see the Great Commission of Christ fulfilled in your world, the place for you to start is right in your own family and neighborhood. Will you pray today for those closest to you? Invite Christ to shine His patience, kindness, goodness and love through you at home and then beyond.
