God’s Plan for TJ

With his shaggy hair covering his eyes, TJ arrived to Sheridan House last fall wearing an offensive rock t-shirt and a cynical “whatever” demeanor.  These external indicators proved to be sadly accurate in discovering some of TJ’s character traits as well; however, what we were unable to see was the determined and stubborn resolve that resided in him. With excitement and joy, the Sheridan House residential program girls decorated the teacher’s lounge at Walter C. Young Middle School to show their tremendous appreciation for a great school year.  The theme for the event was a Mexican Fiesta and the food was generously provided by Lime Fresh Mexican Grill of Pembroke Gardens. Another Great Story…

A few months ago, Stephen joined our residential program.  Upon meeting Stephen, it is safe to say you could run out of adjectives when describing his attitude, behavior, and speech.  Words like disrespectful, disruptive, belligerent, rude, obnoxious, and unpleasant come to mind.  Stephen’s issues were manifesting themselves both at home and at school. Where Are They Now?

Every few months, we invite graduates from our girls’ residential program over to catch up with them and to see how their lives have changed since leaving Sheridan House.  Here are a few updates on some of the graduates from last year:

When I first came to Sheridan House, I continued to be rude and disrespectful.  I was a mean, disobedient girl.  I felt that the world owed me everything.  I’d let my anger out on anyone who stood in my way.  What I failed to realize is that God wanted to use me; I just needed to allow Him to do so.  I just could not register that in my head. Another Great Story…

The boys were still in their first week of school when we received a call from the assistant principal.  As usual, the call was about Derek.  In spite of the fact that he made strides during the summer program, we figured he must have picked up where he left off at the end of the year.  Last year, it seemed Derek was suspended more than he was actually in school.  Whether it was because of his defiance, starting fights with other students, or simply walking out of class, Derek was constantly causing trouble at school.  (more…)
