PUTTING SKIN ON

PUTTING SKIN ON

“And the Word became flesh….”
John 1:14, NIV

I love the story of the little girl who jumped into bed with her mom and dad as a severe thunder and lightning storm came over her home. Her suddenlyawakened dad tried to calm her fears by saying, “Honey, you can go back to your own bed now. God will be with you.” To this statement of adult sized faith, the little girl tearfully replied, “I know God will be with me in my room, but right now I need someone with skin on.”

Are you glad God came into the chaos of our world with “skin on?” How could we ever really know the love of God without having seen God in the flesh full of grace and truth? It is still God’s plan to reveal Himself with “skin on.” He does it today through His body, the church. He does it through you and me. We are to be the people who make God visible, touchable, and real to those frightened by the noise and commotion of this dangerous world.

So many times we as Christians think people need a sermon of words when what they really need is a gentle touch or a sincere hug.

St. Francis of Assisi once said, “Preach the Gospel always. If necessary, use words.” Sometimes we preach the Gospel best by letting someone get close enough to us to touch the Gospel of Jesus or the “skin” of our lives. Today a frightened person may come into your office, store, school, or home. Before you send them on their way, let them enjoy the serenity of your faith until theirs can grow a little stronger. Just be sure your faith is more than just skin deep.

QUESTION: Does your faith have a calming effect on others? Do frightened people ever seek you out? Who calms you when you are afraid?
